Many foot injuries sustained by agricultural workers could be prevented if only the correct safety footwear had been worn. Safety footwear should be regarded by agricultural workers as one of the most important parts of their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Dickies, the UK’s leading workwear manufacturer, produces a wide range of protective footwear in a selection of styles all with steel toe-caps conforming to EN345 (200 Joules). This standard protects the feet from crush injuries equivalent to the impact caused by 20kg in weight falling on to the toes from a height of 10.2 metres and give compression protection corresponding to approximately 1.5 tonnes resting on the toe area.
The Tradition Super Safety Boot from Dickies Deluxe range illustrates the advances made is safety footwear manufacturing. This quality ankle boot combines a full grain leather upper with a sturdy Nitrile rubber sole, heat resistant to 300°C and with a slip resistant tread. The boots are made using the Goodyear welted method of construction. This traditional form of manufacturing involves a strip of material called a “welt” being sewn to the upper and insole of the boot. The outer sole is then attached to the welt. The benefits of Goodyear welted construction over other forms of footwear manufacturing include: exceptional comfort, greater insulation, improved shape retention, superior strength and repairs to the sole are made easier.
To ensure wearer comfort is achieved the Tradition Super Safety Boot is fitted with two synthetic lining materials: Thinsulate and Cambrelle.
Thinsulate is a lightweight thermal insulation comprising of microfibres ten times thinner than conventional synthetic insulation, enabling it to maintain its insulating properties even when wet. It is also highly breathable so avoids condensation and dries exceptionally quickly.
The Cambrelle lining helps to keep the foot cool when working long hours in hot temperatures and will conform to the constant motions of the foot and the boot. It also provides high levels of abrasion resistance and contributes to a comfortable cushioning effect. Cambrelle’s structure has countless microscopic air spaces. This characteristic helps to circulate air but even more crucially, constantly draws moisture away from the foot before dispersing it back into the environment through evaporation. So effective is this structure it is capable of storing up to three-and-a-half times its own weight in moisture, resulting in cooler, drier and more comfortable feet.
In addition to the regulation steel toe-cap the Tradition Super Safety Boot has a flexible steel midsole offering protection against hazards underfoot.
