Naval Base Commander (NBC) Devonport's very high levels of health and safety management performance has earned it this year's Sir George Earle Trophy, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents(RoSPA) top occupational health and safety award.
The organisation demonstrated an ability to improve health and safety performance in a difficult and changing working environment with major hazard, contractor interactions and nuclear safety issues to deal with, this achieved through the commitment of senior managers, including the Commodore and Captain Base Safety, trade unions and the workforce generally. NBC additionally found time to work with its local community in and around Plymouth, develop off-the-job safety (particularly road safety) and to benchmark key performances with other organisations.
