'Route map' to help employers and workers manage workplace transport risk
A number of public HSE-hosted events¹ around the country during the first 2 weeks of July are to provide a forum for those who wish to debate the content of the proposed new 'route map', an on-line tool aimed at helping employers and workers manage workplace transport risk by providing a framework of current law with links to existing guidance, filling any gaps with new guidance.
The route map will follow best practice, offer explanations of how to meet legal responsibilities, including setting out alternative ways to comply where these exist, focussing specifically on:
site layout and design;
vehicle selection and maintenance;
personnel matters; and
management responsibilities.
The events start at 10am, to book contact HSE's Workplace Transport Team on 020 7717 6059/6840/6366 or mailto:workplace.transport@hse.gsi.gov.uk.
A public consultation exercise on the proposals runs until 22nd September 2006, see http://www.hse.gov.uk/consult/condocs/routemap.htm .

Comment:
"These events are aimed at employers and workers who might be affected by risks from vehicles in the workplace. They will provide a real opportunity to influence the way these proposals are taken forward. Every year people are killed and seriously injured in incidents involving vehicles at work. HSE aims to reduce this by 10% over 3 years by introducing clearer methods of identifying problems and providing guidance on how to put them right." - Head of HSE's Field Operations Directorate in Wales and the South West.
